ATO Gives Australians the Green Light to Lodge 2026 Tax Returns

The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has officially opened lodgements for 2026 tax returns, allowing millions of Australians to begin submitting their returns. However, the ATO is urging taxpayers not to rush, warning that lodging too early could lead to mistakes, processing delays, or the need to amend a return later.

Why the ATO Says You Should Wait

Although tax returns can now be lodged, the ATO recommends waiting until your income statement is marked “Tax Ready” and all relevant information has been pre-filled in your return.

This includes information such as:

  • Salary and wages
  • Bank interest
  • Dividend income
  • Government payments
  • Private health insurance details
  • Investment and managed fund information

Waiting until this information is available can help reduce errors and ensure your tax return is accurate.

Don’t Be Tempted to Lodge Too Early

Many Australians are eager to receive their tax refund as soon as possible, but lodging before all income and deduction information has been reported may result in:

  • Missing income that must be declared later
  • Incorrect deduction claims
  • Delays in processing
  • Amendments that take additional time

The ATO continues to use sophisticated data-matching systems that compare information received from employers, banks, government agencies, investment platforms and other institutions. Any discrepancies may trigger further review.

Claim Only What You’re Entitled To

The ATO has also reminded taxpayers to claim only genuine work-related expenses that meet the legal requirements. Before making a claim, ensure that:

  • You spent the money yourself and were not reimbursed.
  • The expense is directly related to earning your income.
  • You have appropriate records to support your claim.

Keeping receipts and maintaining accurate records throughout the year remains the best way to maximise your refund while staying compliant with Australian tax laws.
